What Is a Token in AI?

A token is the basic unit of text that an AI language model reads and generates. Tokens are not always full words — they can be word fragments, punctuation marks, or even single characters, depending on the tokenization algorithm the model uses.

Modern large language models (LLMs) like GPT-4, Claude, and Gemini use a technique called Byte-Pair Encoding (BPE)to split text into tokens. Common short words like “the”, “is”, and “a” are usually one token each. Longer, less common words like “tokenization” may split into 2–3 tokens.

  • “Hello” = 1 token
  • “tokenization” = 3 tokens (token + ization + ...)
  • “ChatGPT” = 3 tokens
  • A space before a word often counts as part of that token

Why Tokens Matter for Cost

AI API pricing is based on tokens, not words or characters. You are charged separately for input tokens (your prompt) and output tokens(the model's response). Output tokens are typically 2–5× more expensive than input tokens because generation is more computationally intensive than reading.
